Vallejo council doesn’t name new interim city manager – yet

VALLEJO – A new interim Vallejo city manager wasn’t named Tuesday night as the Vallejo City Council instead gave direction to city staff about filling the position.

Vallejo City Attorney Veronica Nebb didn’t specify what that direction was after she reported out about what happened in the special closed session.

It was a packed agenda for the council which also gave direction to staff about the process of filling the permanent city manager position.

Vallejo will have at least three city managers in 2021 after interim City Manager Anne Cardwell confirmed she is leaving the city after just two months as interim city manager. Her final day is Oct. 7.

Several possible replacements have been bandied about, including Vallejo’s Water Director Mike Malone, and former Vallejo City Councilwoman Marti Brown.

Brown confirmed recently that she isn’t interested in serving as interim city manager but she declined to comment if she would want to be the city’s permanent city manager.

Multiple sources have also confirmed to this outlet that Malone is Cardwell’s top pick to replace her. However, Cardwell and Malone haven’t returned requests for comment.

The council named Cardwell as acting city manager in June after City Manager Greg Nyhoff left City Hall with an undisclosed medical issue. He later resigned in early July with Cardwell being tapped to serve as interim city manager toward the end of that month.

The council on Tuesday also gave direction to its labor negotiators regarding negotiations with the Vallejo Police Officers’ Association.

The council had been scheduled to discuss two cases of potential litigation, and receive an update about a wrongful death lawsuit filed against the city. However, Nebb said those items would be moved to a future closed session agenda.
