VALLEJO — The annual Great Vallejo Sailboat Race will take place on Saturday, and the Vallejo Yacht Club will be the perfect place to watch over 100 boats race in from Richmond, cross the finish line, and tie up in the club’s harbor. There will be food and dancing into the evening for sailors and spectators alike.
Friday is opening night for Bay Area Stage Theatre’s production of “Misery,” the nerve-shredding thriller that will have you gripping your seat and laughing through the terror. When famous novelist Paul Sheldon is rescued from a devastating car crash by his “number one fan,” Annie Wilkes, he thinks he’s been given a second chance at life. But Annie has plans of her own. The play by William Goldman is based on the novel by Stephen King. The play will run Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday matinees through May 17.
The first Friday of the month brings two opportunities to dance to different styles of music.
The First Fridays Salsa party at Vino Godfather will open the grounds for dancing at 6 p.m. A dance class featuring salsa, merengue, dancehall, Afrobeats, and more will begin at 7 p.m. Dancing under the stars will continue until 9 p.m.
If goth music is more to your liking, head over to Vallejo Goth Night at the Odd Fellows Hall after 9 p.m. and dance to industrial, EDM and darkwave played by DJs Wretch and Kaje, headlined by a live performance by Moon Cries Blood.
Another musical option on Friday night is the contemporary jazz and classical flutist Kim Scott, known for her radiant tone, soulful phrasing, and infectious groove. Scott will be joined by Ranzel Merritt, a rising saxophonist whose sound blends jazz, hip-hop, R&B, and soul. Pre-concert dinner and drinks will be available at the Marquee Club next door at 6 p.m.
On Saturday night, you can catch René Escovedo at 4th Corner Speakeasy. Escovedo toured with Con Funk Shun and is also the founder and leader of two bands, The Fuse, a powerful fusion-based instrumental ensemble, and the vocal trio Tres Amigos.
Then on Sunday afternoon the VOENA Children’s Choir will present Voices of Freedom at the historic St. Peter's Chapel. Voices of Freedom explores the many meanings of freedom across cultures and histories, and features powerful performances from VOENA's diverse singers and global guest artists.
Two shows that will appeal to art lovers will also open this weekend.
The Benicia Arsenal Artists Open Studios show will take place on Saturday and Sunday. 50 artists will show their work in a variety of studios and at Iron Horse Furnishings in the historic Arsenal area. This festive art-filled weekend will feature painting, ceramics, jewelry, printmaking, photography, art installations and more.
And on Sunday afternoon, Mare Island Art Studios will launch their Spring Show, which will feature the vibrant work by their collective of over 20 artists, as well as Blue Skies No Candy, a solo exhibition of new work by Donna Wallace Cohen. The gallery will be open every Sunday in May, with an opening reception next week on Mother’s Day.
Poetry lovers also have two events to look forward to this week.
Benicia Black Lives Matter will host a Black Poetry Celebration to honor the voices, stories, and cultural impact of Black writers and spoken word artists at the Benicia Public Library on Wednesday evening in the Doña Benicia Room. You can also join this event via Zoom.
Then on Saturday evening, founder of Vallejo’s Poetry By The Bay and author of three poetry collections, Kyrah Ayers, will be the featured reader at Alibi Bookshop. Co-Poet Laureates Emeritus Jacalyn Eyvonne and Kathleen Herrmann will also read selected original poems. A reception and networking will follow the readings.
And a couple more noteworthy events outside of Vallejo city limits will take place on Saturday.
Over in American Canyon from 3 to 9 p.m., the Ukrainian electronic music duo ARTBAT will open the party season at The Ruins, an abandoned cement factory with exposed architecture, graffitied walls, and an open air stage.
And a Jazz Dinner & Concert at the Benicia Clock Tower on Saturday evening will feature the Benicia Middle School and High School jazz bands, with special guest the Benicia Community Jazz Band.
This is only a brief sampling of things to do in the Vallejo area. Scroll down the list below to find more art exhibits, live music and creative and recreational activities.
