VALLEJO — Punk rock shows are rare in Vallejo, so fans will be happy to learn that two powerhouse punk bands will take the stage at the Empress Lounge on Thursday evening in this month’s offering by Indie After Dark.
The Bay Area band Angry Aztecs will unleash raw energy with driving rhythms, fierce vocals, and thrash punk attitude, followed by Vallejo’s own AJAR, fusing punk, post-punk, garage rock, and noise into an unpredictable sonic ride.
If you prefer something more mellow, check out the eclectic mix of funk, soul, and blues of the Evan Thomas Band at the Empress Lounge on Wednesday evening, or the Americana roots sounds of Richard March at the Mare Island Coal Shed Brewery on Friday evening.
Or if you like to dance, Papa Joe & The New Deal will shake it up with soul, R&B, reggae, old school funk and Latin rock at Vino Godfather on Saturday afternoon.
Then on Saturday, you can choose between two dinnertime jazz offerings. The Bryan Girard Jazz Trio will show off their broad repertoire of jazz standards at Manny’s Steakhouse. Or you can catch Vallejo jazz singer Joyce Grant’s powerful mix of jazz, blues, funk and R&B at the Mare Island Brewing Company’s Ferry Taproom.
On Sunday afternoon on Mare Island, the GTS Band will play Latin, funk and soul at Vino Godfather, the VOENA Children's Choir will offer live entertainment and live and silent auctions during their Vines and Voices Garden Gala & Fundraiser at the nearby Admiral’s Mansion, and the American Canyon High School Chamber Choir will perform "A Soundtrack Of Our Year," a musical retrospective concert at St Peter’s Chapel.
Live music isn’t the only thing going on in Vallejo.
History buffs may enjoy the screening of the film "From Sea to Shining Sea" on Thursday evening at the Vallejo Museum. This documentary about the origin of the song “America the Beautiful” will be followed by a Q&A session by the film’s writer and director, John De Graaf.
Then on Saturday afternoon, take a deep dive into Mare Island history at Dr. Tom Snyder’s talk about the history of the Mare Island Naval Hospital at St. Peter’s Chapel. Snyder’s book about the history of the hospital was featured in a recent Vallejo Sun article.
The annual Vallejo Garden Tour fundraiser on Sunday will begin in the morning at the Vallejo Museum, where you can pick up a map of participating gardens in and around Vallejo. Each site has been selected by master gardeners who will be on hand to answer questions. You may go to all the gardens or only a few, in any order you choose. The $40 ticket will help support the museum.
If you need some laughs, check out the family-friendly dinnertime show by Blackbook Comedy on Tuesday at Bambino’s Restaurant. Be sure to arrive early to get a table near the stage.
And if you feel like venturing a little further afield, bring a kite to the 17th Annual Lynch Canyon Kite Festival on Saturday at the Lynch Canyon Open Space Park at the border of Fairfield and Vallejo. Or bring your blankets and chairs and enjoy a wide variety of live music, art and food at the ParkFest/Art Extravaganza in American Canyon on Saturday afternoon.
For a more robust art experience, visit the Benicia Arsenal Artists Open Studios, either Saturday or Sunday, where Benicia artists will display their works throughout the historic buildings of the former U.S. Army Arsenal complex.

LGBTQ+ May Book Club: "The Well of Loneliness" by Radclyffe Hall
Please join us on Wednesday May 14th at 5:30 pm to discuss the LGBTQ May Book Club pick, "The Well of Loneliness" by Radclyffe Hall, hosted by Richard May! First published in 1928, "The Well of Loneliness" is now considered to be a classic of lesbian/queer literature, but at the time it was headline scandalous -- a judge in England ruled it obscene and it was not published in Britain again until 1949. It's the story Stephen Gordon, who finds love with Mary Llewellyn, whom she meets while serving as an ambulance driver during the First World War, but their happiness together is marred by social isolation and rejection. So please join us on May 14th at 5:30 -- and of course Richard will bring snacks!
