BENICIA – Benicia City Park hosted the second annual Fiestas Primavera, or Spring Celebrations, on Saturday, an educational cultural event that aims to create community.
The event featured live music, youth poetry, a raffle, cuisine from different cultures, exhibits by multicultural artists, and a cultural and educational pavilion to highlight some of the struggles of immigrants and people of color.
While the mood of the event was celebratory, it also carried a strong message of cross cultural unity. It was organized last year to bring awareness about a dangerous game played by Benicia students called “La Migra,” which is Mexican slang for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, in which students role play as ICE agents hunting immigrants.
Many also decried the recent anti-immigrant actions of the Trump Administration.
