BENICIA – As the Bay Area braces for another heat wave, the Benicia Senior Center will serve as a cooling center this weekend, the city announced Thursday.
The cooling center, located at 187 East L St., will offer a space for residents who don’t have air conditioning. It will be open from noon to 7 p.m., Sunday through Tuesday.
“Although the National Weather Service has not issued an Excessive or Extreme Heat Warning for our area, the cooling center is being opened so that our senior population and those most vulnerable can get out of the heat,” interim City Manager Erik Upson said in a city press release. “There is an increased risk of heat-related illnesses for people exposed to hot weather.”
It’s not immediately known if the city of Vallejo will also open a cooling shelter over the weekend.
Those entering the cooling shelter will have their temperature taken, be required to wear a face covering and maintain social distance from those they do not live with, officials said.
Space is limited and individuals are asked to save space for seniors and others in need.
The National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch from 11 a.m. Saturday until 8 a.m. Monday due to gusty winds, low humidity and high temperatures.
Questions on the cooling center may be directed to the city’s Parks & Community Services Department at (707) 746-4285 or pcs@ci.benicia.ca.us.
