Upcoming Vallejo Events — Rapper Nef the Pharaoh at Noble Cinema Studios

VALLEJO — Vallejo rapper Nef the Pharaoh, who defined a generation of Bay Area hip-hop, will perform on Saturday evening as part of the Noble Cinema Studios “Respect The Legends” series. If you aren’t familiar with his music, check out his early hit “Bling Blaow” or the more recent collaboration with LaRussell, “Furley Goat.”

Two back-to-back art and music-themed street festivals will energize downtown Vallejo this week. 

The second August Summer Nights event on Thursday evening will be headlined by the high-octane tropical sounds of the La Nueva Era salsa band. The event on Georgia, Marin and Virginia streets will also feature a car show, a beer garden, food trucks and sweets, a kid zone and a dog zone.

Then on Friday evening, the monthly Vallejo 2nd Friday Artwalk will enliven the same downtown neighborhood with art and hand made crafts, live music and a car show. The City Arts Gallery will debut two art installations, “Jaguar Azul” by Sal Garcia and “Inspirations” by Caroline Takeda and Linda Baehr. Garcia will hold an artist talk about his love of color and pre-Colombian design at 7 p.m. 

At least two live bands will perform during Art Walk – Don Bassey and Friends will play roots Americana at Vallejo Brewing Company, and Somebody will play reggaetrova pop-fusion at Anchor Pantry.

After checking out Art Walk, head over to 4th Corner Speakeasy to hear Indie After Dark’s latest offering of original music by the bands Everything but the Everything and Strange Culprits.

If you’re interested in police oversight, attend the Town Hall Meeting about the recently released Vallejo Police Department police reforms and badge bending reports. The meeting will be held at the Vallejo Museum and over Zoom on Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The panel will include City Manager Harry Black, City Councilmembers Tonia Lediju and Alex Matias, City Attorney Veronica Nebb, Vallejo Police Chief Jason Ta, Vallejo Police Sgt. Rashad Hollis, Police Accountability & Oversight Commission Chair John Lewis, and civil rights attorney Melissa Nold. 

Poetry, film screenings and theater are happening this week in Vallejo too.

OZCAT radio will broadcast an interview with poet Tamika Bailey on Thursday morning. Bailey is the spoken word performer who founded the new monthly Poetry by the Cup event at Moschetti Coffee.

And Sunday at noon, the I Need a Mic: Open Mic event will take place at City Arts Gallery.

The Vallejo Museum will show the film Mayor Humphrey of Minneapolis, a documentary covering the transformative mayoral term of Senator Hubert Humphrey between 1945 and 1948. during which he reformed the Minneapolis Police department and fought segregation. Filmmaker Mick Caoutte will join in for post show questions and discussion.

For theater lovers, this weekend is your last chance to catch two locally produced plays.

The last three performances of “The Cemetery Club” at Bay Area Stage Theatre will be on Friday and Saturday evening and a Sunday matinee.

And Vallejo Shakespeare in the Park will present “Richard III” in ticketed fundraiser shows at Vino Godfather on Friday and Saturday evening.

There’s plenty of fun to be had beyond Vallejo too.

A family friendly Storywalk will be held at Shenandoah Park in American Canyon on Friday afternoon. The book “Leif and the Fall” will be featured along an easy and interactive walk at six kiosks around the 1/4 mile perimeter path of the park. The guided read-and-walks will take place at 4:30, 5 and 5:30 p.m., with free popcorn and nature craft activities planned before each walk.

Also, the monthly Walk It Shop It | Crockett will transform Crockett’s sidewalks into a lively open-air marketplace of vintage dealers, artists, makers and independent shop owners on Saturday afternoon. Pick up a raffle map, explore the historic town while collecting signatures, and enter to win a town-wide raffle featuring gifts donated by every participating shop.

Since emerging on the Bay Area jazz scene in 2014, Stella Heath has become one of the busiest and most consistently captivating vocalists in the region. The Cemetery Club

Don’t be fooled by the title of this play – it’s a comedy! Ivan Menchell’s The Cemetery Club is a bittersweet comedy about three Jewish widows in Queens, New York, who meet monthly to visit their husbands' graves. Roots & Resonance

Hannah Mayree (they/them) is an artist and musician whose work as a banjoist, multi-instrumentalist, producer and vocalist has been a historic excavation of folk music as well as a window into the future of folk. Hannah has a body of work that highlights original and traditional banjo compositions as well as harmonies through acoustic live vocal looping and involves audiences in community singing. On the dawn of releasing their second studio album following the 2017, Thoughts of the Night, Hannah's evolution as a musician has included holding down solo performances as well as duo, trio and full band configurations and highlights both the Black string and tradition as well as innovating between genres, expressing the conditions of our world and sparking change through culturally stewarded experiences they curate for music loving communities. They founded and creatively direct the Black Banjo Reclamation Project which is currently creating musical, cultural and land-based opportunities for Black, Afro-Diasporic communities around the world to work with the banjo as a tool for reclaiming ancestral wisdom & creating Afro-futures.

Join us live at the Mira Theatre every 3rd Saturday of the month. Vallejo Jazz Jam's mission is to provide a supportive and non-competitive environment for musicians of all levels to explore our rich heritage of jazz standards. The Vallejo Jazz Jam welcomes musicians of all ages, genders and levels. Monthly they develop a consensus of tunes to play for two-hour sessions, held on the third Saturday of the month. Bring your instrument, bring your friends and settle in for a night of live jazz at the Empress Marquee Club. Monday Jazz Jam is a welcoming, musician-friendly evening where players can sit in and the music moves naturally from swinging standards to blues, ballads, Latin grooves and spontaneous improvisation, open to horn players, vocalists, guitarists, percussionists, bassists, pianists and jazz lovers alike. Sewing Workshop

Sew a quilted potholder at the JFK Library! The Vallejo John F. Kennedy Library is hosting a start-to-finish sewing workshop making a quilted potholder using a friendship star quilt block pattern. We will provide a limited selection of fabrics, but you are more than welcome to bring your own materials if you have any you would prefer to use. If you bring your own fabric, please make sure it is entirely made of cotton or linen because these fabrics withstand heat the best. We have 4 sewing machines available for the workshop. If you have your own machine you would like to bring, please let us so know so we can set up the room accordingly. Participants in this adult program need to know some sewing machine basics such as threading a machine, sewing straight lines, and maintaining a quarter-inch seam allowance.
