Upcoming Vallejo Events — Fiestas Patrias celebration joins Art Walk

VALLEJO — The annual Fiestas Patrias festival will join 2^nd Friday Art Walk in downtown Vallejo. The celebration will open at 3 p.m. with a brief ceremony commemorating Mexican Independence with representatives from the Consulate General of Mexico. The festival will also celebrate other Latin American nations that commemorate their independence during the month of September: Brazil, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, Chile, and Belize.

A variety of musicians, dancers and performers who represent the richness and diversity of Latin American communities will take to the stage until 9p.m. The music styles will range from mariachi, corridos, and reggaetrova-pop fusion, to salsa and Latin jazz. The musical performances will be interspersed with ballet folklorico and regional dances. See the full schedule here.

An assortment of food from different regions will provide guests an opportunity to enjoy flavors that are part of Latin America’s identity and cultural heritage.

The Fiestas Patrias festival will be surrounded by 2nd Friday Art Walk activities from 5 to 9 p.m. You'll find local artists, hand made crafts, gallery openings, open shops, restaurants and live music throughout the downtown area.

A new art exhibit, "A Bit of This & That," featuring mixed media, encaustic and photography by Cheryl Ann Shanks and Karl Sutphin will debut at the McCune Room in the lower floor of the John F. Kennedy Library, and a closing ceremony for “Into Abstraction-Art by Simone Nia Rae” will be held at Ethnic Notions Fine Art Gallery & Multi Cultural Bookstore.

Live music during Art Walk will include Don Bassey and Friends’ blend of Americana, folk and blues in the outdoor courtyard at Vallejo Brewing Company. An open mic R&B, jazz and blues showcase will take place at Snap U Clear photography studio, and The Breedloves acoustic duo will play at Bambino’s.

The Odd Fellows Hall will be open during Art Walk for an Odds & Ends Sale Special Preview. The $5 door charge will give you first access to the sale items. There will also be live music and an open bar at this event. The Odds & Ends Sale will reopen on Saturday during Farmer’s market for a family-friendly day with free entry, coffee, tea, and refreshments for children.

Then as Art Walk begins to wind down, Indie After Dark will present a night of original music starting at 8 p.m. at 4th Corner Speakeasy. The handpicked bands are Westerly, a soulful blend of pop punk and Americana, Temper of Sound, offering gritty hard rock and pop rock, and The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, a psychedelic post-punk band.

Verismo Opera will be back at the Mira Theatre on Saturday. Love, lust, jealousy, deception, torture, murder, suicide – all in one opera: “Tosca” by Giacomo Puccini. An idealistic artist, a celebrated singer and a corrupt police chief engage in a fierce battle of wills in this tempestuous tale of cruelty and deception. With its themes of political intrigue, sexual intimidation and official hypocrisy, Puccini’s masterpiece rings true today through its powerfully dramatic and gorgeous music. The opera singers will be accompanied by a live chamber orchestra, and English supertitles will be projected above the stage. 

“Tosca” will be performed Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons through Sept 27. Verismo Opera is now offering free admission to make opera accessible to all. Support this effort with a seasonal $30 membership.

Owls, birds and dragons will fill the sky during the Vallejo Kite Festival on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.at the Barbara Kondylis Waterfront Green. A collection of large, professional kites will be flown by The Kite Man of Martinez. Participants can bring their own kite to fly or purchase or make one on site. A virtual reality drone flight experience from inside a stationary hot air balloon is also an option.

Up the street from the kite festival, the Cultivate Community Harvest Festival will take place at Unity Plaza in front of the John F. Kennedy Library on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will feature a community share table where you can share garden produce, garden tools, plants, and seeds. Cooking and gardening workshops will help you become a better gardener and cook. Demonstrations on apple sauce and sauerkraut making will give you a chance to learn and take free samples home. The event will also host local partner booths where you can connect with organizations and businesses dedicated to sustainability, urban gardening and local food security, and a kids’ corner will be filled with fun activities.

Sept. 9 is National Teddy Bear Day, and Children’s Wonderland Park will celebrate with a Teddy Bear Picnic in the Park on Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. Event highlights will include face painting, a magic show, storytime with the Solano County Library, Teddy Bear crafts, a Teddy Bear clinic (bring your plush pal for a check-up!), a picnic and outdoor fun.

Then on Saturday from 4 to 9 p.m., the Coal Sheds on the Mare Island Promenade, will be transformed into an ethereal white oasis overlooking the waterfront at the White Lotus- 7th Annual All White Affair. Get ready to rock your all-white outfit and indulge in delicious offerings from curated food vendors, move to the rhythm of three powerhouse DJs, and enjoy the excitement of celebrity guests gracing the night. White Lotus is a Darryl Reed Foundation cultural-philanthropy experience that supports mentorship, violence prevention, entrepreneurship, financial literacy and leadership development for young people throughout Northern California.

A little to the north of the Coal Sheds, Mare Island Art Studios will host an opening reception for the “Nothing To See Here" art exhibit by Jason Perry on Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m. The artwork is a critical, yet playful examination of the UFO phenomenon that is hinged on the dynamic between serious scientific inquiry and fringe science. With a mixed media approach that combines drawing, collage, and painting, Perry calls into question the blurred narratives, misinformation, and potential truths surrounding the UFO topic. The show will also be open every Sunday afternoon in September from noon to 4 p.m.

And back on the mainland, the Vallejo Sister City Association will hold their 20th International Dinner & Auction at the Filipino Community Center on Saturday from 5:30 to 11 p.m. Enjoy a vibrant celebration of cultures from around the world during an evening filled with delicious international cuisine, cultural experiences, friendship, entertainment, and an exciting silent auction featuring unique items. This year's theme is Tanzania.

Then on Sunday from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., the Founders Day Living History Tour will explore Mare Island's 142-year shipbuilding legacy through a guided walking tour with live reenactments by the Interpreting History acting troupe.

As you travel between four presentation stations throughout the historic shipyard, professional actors and knowledgeable docents will bring Mare Island's past to life through engaging reenactments, storytelling, and historical interpretation. 

The tour will begin and end at the historic Admiral's Mansion, where guests can enjoy a beer and wine garden, browse community exhibits, bid on unique silent auction items, and connect with fellow history enthusiasts.

The Mare Island Brewing Co. Coal Shed Brewery is putting the public house back into the pub at the Pints with Politicians: District 4 Candidates Forum on Monday evening, the first in a series of opportunities to get to know the candidates for Vallejo City Council District 4. During a 90-minutes forum, each candidate will have equal time to respond to prepared questions about Mare Island development, taxes, shipyard revitalization, and how the City of Vallejo is run. The bar will open at 5:30 p.m. and the forum will start at 6 p.m.

Each of the three candidates will return individually for a casual meet and greet with voters: Sept. 17 – Brianna Rogers, Oct. 1 – Chris Platzer, Oct. 8 – Charles Palmares. Each event will start at 6 p.m.

The tragic anniversary of 9/11 will be commemorated Thursday through Saturday at the Benicia Public Library. The 9/11 Remembered 25 Years Later exhibit will present 14 posters from the 9/11 Memorial and Museum and a book with the names and information about the heroes taken from us.

Usually at our meetings, we will have a prepared speech, and a speech evaluation. The Grammarian and Wizard of Ah's will listen for turns of phrases and the use of filler words. We also practice impromptu speaking during the section of the meeting called Table Topics. During Table Topics, at a recent meeting, we were asked what we felt was the biggest communication problem or challenge. What would you answer in a fast moment? Table topics will challenge you to think quickly and give an answer without preparation.

You will also hear tips on public speaking skills at our upcoming meeting. Whether you're a seasoned traveler or just looking for some adventure from the comfort of your home, this event is perfect for you.

Mexican Independence Day celebration. Cultural performances, live music, food and craft vendors.

This year our celebration will be especially meaningful. We will have the honor of receiving representatives from the Consulate General of Mexico in San Francisco, including Ursula Rojas Weiser, Consul of Economic and Political Affairs, and Mireya Magaña Galvez, Associate Consul. Our distinguished guests will participate in a Civic Ceremony commemorating Mexican Independence and in the traditional Grito de Dolores ceremony at 3 p.m.

Although this event will include the traditional Grito de Dolores, symbol of Mexico's Independence, the Vallejo Independence Festival also recognizes and proudly celebrates the Latin American nations that commemorate their independence during the month of September: Brazil, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, Chile, and Belize.

A Community Tribute on the Bay Trail

Please join us for a meaningful afternoon of remembrance, community, and hope as Benicia comes together at its new Bay Trail mural. More than 100 community members are expected to attend, with invitations extended to the Mayor, local elected officials, firefighters, police officers, and other first responders.

The program will include a special moment of remembrance for those who were lost, accompanied by a moving bagpipe tribute, while honoring the courage, sacrifice, and service of our first responders.

Children from first-responder families will place their palm prints on the mural—creating a lasting symbol of service, sacrifice, family, and the generations who will carry Benicia’s spirit forward.

“Rooted in Benicia—Together We Blossom” celebrates the people, history, natural beauty, and community spirit that make Benicia such a special place. This gathering is more than the creation of public art. It is an opportunity to remember those we lost, honor those who protect and serve us, and celebrate the unity and resilience of Benicia.

9/11 Remembered 25 Years Later

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of this tragedy, the Benicia Public Library is proud to present 14 posters from the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. The exhibit will also include a book with the names and information of the heroes taken from us.

Our Pottery Projects focus on one particular project, and we walk you through it, so no experience is required! You can get as creative as you desire--or just keep it simple--it's entirely up to you.

This Sunday Afternoon Pottery Project will be creating a Hand-built Mug with a beautiful leaf (or leaves) that are made with a gorgeous speckled clay. Feel free to bring your own leaf, or leaves, to use as a template, if you'd like! At the end, you can add a handle if you desire, or keep it simple as a cup.

You will pick one of the glaze options before you leave, and we will glaze your project for you. Afterwards, the project will need to be dried, fired, glazed, and then fir ed again. It will be ready to be picked up in approximately 3-4 weeks after the class. We will email you when they're ready.

St. Peter's Chapel - Self-guided Tour

Visit St. Peter’s Chapel, home to the largest collection of Tiffany stained-glass windows in a single location. Nothing To See Here – Jason Perry

"Nothing To See Here" is a critical, yet playful examination of the UFO phenomenon that is hinged on the dynamic between serious scientific inquiry and fringe science.

With a mixed media approach that combines drawing, collage, and painting, Jason Perry seeks to entice the viewer into the work through familiar visual iconography, bold colors, expressive marks, and textures. Once there, the viewer is offered a deeper layer of meaning to consider. Perry calls into question the blurred narratives, misinformation, and potential truths surrounding the UFO topic.

At its core, "Nothing To See Here" invites us to look a little closer at our beliefs, our relationship to the strange, the unexplained, and our enduring fascination with what might be out there.

Experience history where it happened on this guided walking tour featuring the Interpreting History Players. As you travel between four presentation stations throughout the historic shipyard, professional actors and knowledgeable docents will bring Mare Island's past to life through engaging reenactments, storytelling, and historical interpretation. From the Civil War to the Cold War, discover how Mare Island helped shape America's naval history and contributed to the nation's defense for more than a century.

Pints with Politicians: District 4 Candidates Forum

We offered up—to all the candidates for Vallejo City Council District 4—an opportunity to come hang for a night at our Coal Shed Brewery and meet and greet with voters. And they all said yes!

First up: a moderated forum, hosted in partnership with the Mare Island Neighborhood Watch. Landis Graden moderates. Ninety minutes, equal time for every candidate, and questions prepared in advance covering Mare Island development, Mare Island taxes, shipyard revitalization, and how the City of Vallejo is run.

DIY Mexican Folk Art Mirror

Hispanic Heritage Month takes place from September 15 to October 15. This month's drop in craft is dedicated to the Mexican Folk Art Mirror. Using materials such as foil, paper plates, and markers/crayons/color pencils, we'll be making our own version of the Mexican Folk Art Mirror. This project is a drop in craft that will be available during open library hours starting on Monday, September 14 to Saturday, September 26.
