VALLEJO — August Summer Nights returns to downtown Vallejo this year on three consecutive Friday evenings, with entertainment, food trucks and vendors, a beer garden and a kid zone.
This week’s theme is Youth Arts & Community Wellness, which includes yoga, a chalk art contest, and a TikTok dance battle. The Georgia Street stage will feature live music, DJs, dancing, and cultural performances by Avery & Friends, DJ Jack Nas, AAPN Step Girls, Moon Azteca ballet folklórico, and a martial arts demonstration by Sho Shu Kung Fu Karate.
The festival will be followed by a free afterparty and open mic music event at 4th Corner Speakeasy in the Red Men’s Hall on Georgia Street.
August Summer Nights has been scaled down this year from five weekly events to three for financial reasons, and has moved from Thursday to Friday evenings.
It also faced some controversy after the event holder, Vallejo Main Street, accepted a sponsorship from California Forever, the company that bought land in rural Solano County with the intention of building a new city. A social media post by opposition group California ForNever indicated there may be organized counter-messaging at Friday’s event against “billionaire-city manufacturing of consent” and attempts to “normalize a predatory and anti-democratic land flip.”
Vallejo Main Street issued a statement saying that sponsorship does not equal endorsement. “We remain focused on our core mission — creating a space where people from all walks of life can come together to celebrate and support our community,” the group said.
Vallejo Main Street has also received criticism for charging admission for kids to use a jump house attraction. Board president Pippin Dew said that the jump house is not paid for by Vallejo Main Street, but is provided by a private vendor. Dew secured a sponsorship from the Solano Association of Realtors for vouchers to “Read a book and Jump for Free” for kids 12 and under.
A spooky circus is coming to the Solano County Fairgrounds this weekend with Paranormal Cirque II. The first show is on Friday evening, there will be two shows on Saturday and Sunday, and the closing act is on Monday. This circus is not for kids! No one under the age of 13 will be admitted, and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Presented by the Italian entertainment company Cirque Italia, it promises a crazy yet fun fusion of circus, theater, and cabaret, wrapped in a horror story that features different shades of sexy.
On Thursday evening, the documentary “Can’t Look Away” will be shown at the 717 Integrity Project. The film exposes the dark side of social media and its devastating impact on young users, and follows the legal battle to hold tech companies accountable for the harm caused by their alleged negligence and dangerous algorithms.
Theater lovers can help support Vallejo Shakespeare in the Park by attending the $25 fundraiser productions of “As You Like It” at Vino Godfather on Friday or Saturday evening. These shows conclude the troupe’s summer season of free Shakespeare plays in parks around the Bay Area.
The Vallejo Museum will host a reception for the Victory for Vallejo exhibit of World War II artifacts on Thursday afternoon to commemorate 80 years since the end of the war. The exhibit will be up through Aug. 30.
On Saturday afternoon, the 2nd Annual Art of Community Awards Ceremony will take place at Mare Island Art Studios to celebrate impact-makers in Vallejo’s creative ecosystem. After the ceremony, take a peek inside the gallery after the ceremony to see works of Bay Area artists curated by Artiszen Vallejo and Mare Island Art Studios.
Then on Sunday afternoon, the Rhythm & Runways fashion show will dazzle the audience at Vino Godfather with the latest collections by talented local designers. The party band Pride and Joy will play timeless pop and soul music. This highly anticipated multicultural fashion show will not only celebrate diversity in fashion, but also raise funds for the local school district.
If you care to hop across the bridge this Saturday, check out the Dreaming of the Islands festival in Crockett across the street from C&H Sugar. The island themed event will feature tropical drinks and music and island cuisine. Over 30 Bay Area vendors, including some Vallejo artists, will be there.
These are just some highlights of things to do in Vallejo and beyond. Scroll down the list below for more live music, theater, cultural and recreational activities, and be sure to check our events page for more kids’ activities, creative workshops and late-breaking updates.
