VALLEJO — Vallejo will turn out for Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a three-day weekend of free events hosted by the NAACP Vallejo Branch.
The first of the three will be a youth program on Saturday at Hogan Middle School, with a basketball camp and tournament, literacy activities with the Solano County Library Leaders and Literacy Project, and programs with community veterans, Vallejo police, IHART and more.
Then on Sunday at 3 p.m., a special service and gospel concert will be held at Union Baptist Church.
The main event on Monday will begin with a march from the Wells Fargo bank on Tennessee Street to Hogan Middle School, and will conclude there with a community program featuring youth and adult panels and keynote speaker Solano County Supervisor Cassandra James.
Also in honor of King, the Benicia Public Library will host Reading, Reflection, Resolve: How Would Dr. King View the World Today? on Sunday afternoon. This event will explore how King’s words, values, and moral leadership might critically engage with the challenges and opportunities of our present moment, and how his vision can continue to guide collective action moving forward.
American Canyon will hold the MLK National Day of Service on Monday morning at the Wetlands Edge Trail for a community wetlands clean up. The day of service will consist of light trash clean-up with all materials including gloves, trash bags, and garbage pickers provided by the Parks Foundation. This event is part of San Francisco Bay Ferry’s “Tides & Tunes” series, a month-long lineup of special January experiences designed to reimagine ferry travel through live music and culture. Passengers who purchase the $20 day pass ticket can take all four musical trips across the bay. Tickets for youth under 18 are $1 per single ride.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Community Gathering
The Benicia Public Library, in partnership with Benicia Black Lives Matter and Ethnic Notions Art Gallery & Bookstore, invites the community to gather to honor the life, legacy, and enduring relevance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through a meaningful afternoon of reading, reflection, and resolve.
Titled Reading, Reflection, Resolve: How Would Dr. King View the World Today?, this Martin Luther King Jr. Day event will explore how Dr. King’s words, values, and moral leadership might critically engage with the challenges and opportunities of our present moment—and how his vision can continue to guide collective action moving forward.
Featured guest speakers will include: Solano County Supervisor Cassandra James, Benicia Mayor Steve Young, Council Member Kari Birdseye, Vallejo City Councilmember Dr. Tonia Lediju, Civil Rights Attorney Brandon Greene Esq., Revered Kim Kendrick, Mario Saucedo of Solano AIDS Coalition, Mary Susan Gast, Benicia's 8th Poet Laureate, poet Myla J., along with other community members.
Rather than focusing solely on Dr. King as a historical figure, the program invites participants to engage with his ideas as living principles. Community members and local leaders will lead group readings from a selection of Dr. King’s most influential speeches, encouraging thoughtful discussion about their relevance today.
These readings will serve as a foundation for conversation about justice, equity, nonviolence, civic responsibility, and the ongoing work required to build a more inclusive society. The program will also include an exploration of the sustained grassroots organizing and advocacy that led to the establishment of Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a federal holiday, underscoring the importance of collective effort, persistence, and community engagement in creating lasting social change. To ensure the event is welcoming to all ages, children will be invited to participate in drawing activities designed for the event by Ethnic Notions' artist Simone Nia Rae, encouraging creative expression around themes of kindness, justice, and community.
Light refreshments will be provided.
