Upcoming events in Vallejo and beyond — Art, culture and music festivals abound

VALLEJO — The City of Vallejo is launching Global Saturdays to celebrate Vallejo's 175th Anniversary with cultural diversity, support local businesses, activate public spaces, and bring people together through arts, culture, commerce, and shared experiences. The inaugural event, Port of Cultures will take place at the Barbara Kondylis Waterfront Green and the first two blocks of Georgia Street this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

This free event will offer interactive experiences, family fun, and hands-on activities throughout the day. Highlights include live Sumo wrestling, mechanical bull rides, a golf simulator, a soccer and sports zone, yoga with BlackFULLness, chess matches and workshops with Black Men's Chess League, free haircuts and hair braiding, an international food court and local makers and merchants.

The Art & Culture Street Gallery will host poetry by Poet Laureate Emeritus of Vallejo Jacalyn Eyvonne, Gail Byrdsong and Myla J.

Live and DJ music at Port of Cultures will feature a wide variety of genres, with DJ Jack Nas, DJ Shaadie, DJ SoFresh, Akil the Big Deal, candid!, Cuadra Efectiva, Dozee, HOF JAE, Hous3, and RichMusiq. 

Then on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Obtainium Works will host the free Obtainium Cup Extravaganza. Tour the workspace and the newly refurbished Neverwas Haul mobile art installation. The entire 500 block of Pennsylvania Street in Vallejo will be shut down to host a full afternoon of live music, an upcycled fashion show, art cars, kinetic art vehicles, craft vendors specializing in recycled and repurposed materials, food trucks, a wine and beer garden, and lots of fun activities for the whole family.

Also on Sunday afternoon, you can enjoy Wine & Jazz at the Glen Cove Marina. Sip on wines by Vallejo Cellars, enjoy handcrafted wine cocktails by The Pour Up Wine Bar, grab a bite from local food trucks, and listen to live jazz by Stratify Band. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets, gather your friends, and get ready for an afternoon of live music, great wine, delicious food, and unforgettable waterfront vibes. This is a 21 and over event.

Benicia is not to be outdone by Vallejo. The Benicia Waterfront Weekend will take place on both Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.at the Benicia First Street Green. Kids 12 and under get in free. The Musical lineup is Juan Escovedo, Big Blu Soul Revue, Mercy Me, Bay Area Jazz & Soul, My So Called Band, Sixteen Scandals, Ex-Capitals and special guest Avery Rose. Savor Benicia's local cuisine in the Taste of Benicia Food Pavilion, sip regional favorites in the Wine of Local Vines Pavilion, and explore one-of-a-kind arts and crafts from talented local makers and artisans.

Comedy and theatrical events are also happening this week.

Blackbook Comedy will deliver punchlines at the Comedy Night Show Charity fundraiser for the Women of the Moose at the Vallejo Moose Lodge on Friday from 6 to 10 p.m. The night of fun will also offer a raffle, caricature drawings, and a taco dinner.

The Vallejo Center For The Arts will highlight the accomplishments of the kids who took part in the Summer Arts Camp program with a Summer Arts Camp Celebration on Saturday. The event will begin at 11 a.m. at Temple Art Lofts with a Student Art Exhibition. Then at 1:30 p.m., camp participants will stage a theatrical performance at the Empress Theatre. 

Vallejo Shakespeare in the Park will kick off their season of free outdoor theater with an original take on “Richard III” in Hanns Park on both Saturday and Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. The play follows the ruthless rise of the Duke of Gloucester to the English throne after the Wars of the Roses. Bring a blanket or low chair for a comfortable viewing experience.

Animal lovers will be happy to learn that Community Cat Advocates, a local nonprofit cat rescue organization, will be presented with $10,000 worth of rewards points from PetSmart on Saturday at 11 a.m. PetSmart hosts a CCA cat adoption event every Saturday, and will cover adoption fees during this event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

If you find cold blooded creatures fascinating, check out the Vallejo Reptile & Oddities Expo fundraiser on Sunday at the Solano County Fairgrounds. See a large selection of snakes, lizards, tarantulas, amphibians, and related supplies available for sale. All profits from ticket sales will benefit JnW Reptile Rescue.

Nature Hike at Lynch Canyon

This hike will take visitors westward along Middle Valley Trail leading to Prairie Ridge. Expect about a 5 mile hike at a moderate, but even pace over uneven ground. Muddy spots will have cattle prints. There are steep climbs over several hills with the longest at Prairie Ridge. It’s worth it to see the view of the northern San Francisco Bay. Meet in the parking lot: Parking is $5. Please be prepared to pay by cash or check. Envelopes are in the iron ranger near the main gate.
