Benicia opening cooling center amid excessive heat
Benicia City Hall

BENICIA – In preparation for the heatwave expected to hit the area over the weekend and into early next week, the Benicia Senior Center will be used as a cooling center for seniors and those without working air conditioning, city officials announced.

The senior center, located at 187 East L St., will open as cooling center from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday, through Tuesday.

“Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, people entering the Benicia Senior Center will
have their temperature taken, be required to wear a face covering at all times
and must maintain social distance from those they do not live with,” officials said in a press release. “To accommodate State social distancing guidelines, space is limited. People are encouraged to save the available space for seniors and others in need.”

City staff is expected to evaluate conditions on Tuesday to determine if the cooling center will remain open, officials added.

Officials are also asking residents to limit outdoor activity, not leave pets or children in cars, stay in air-conditioned areas, drink plenty of fluids, watch for hot pavement while walking dogs, and check on senior citizens or anyone who may have health or mobility issues.
