VALLEJO — The annual Winged Migration Expo comes to Mare Island this weekend to celebrate the Bay Area's place in the Pacific Flyway. The festival will be headquartered at Building 69 in the Historic Core of Mare Island on Saturday and Sunday, where you can see interactive exhibits, educational presentations about birding and other wildlife, and Mare Island history.
The Winged Migration Expo is also sponsoring guided birding hikes on Mare Island, and as far beyond as Sears Point. And there’s a rare opportunity to tour one of the historic ships docked on Mare Island, the Thayer, for those who register in advance.
The Carquinez Quad Squad will host an all-day roller derby showcase featuring skaters from around the region at the Solano County Fairgrounds on Saturday. The Tomato Jam: 80s Arcade Mayhem Roller Derby will begin with a Sur5al tournament, continue with games, raffles, a costume contest and a scrimmage, and conclude with an awards ceremony.
The Vallejo Symphony will perform at The Empress Theatre on Sunday afternoon, with Haydn’s irresistible “Clock” symphony anchoring the program. Ravel’s delicate tribute to the French Baroque will open the evening, followed by Berlioz’s ravishing Les Nuits d’été, featuring mezzo soprano Nikola Printz, whose artistry warmth will make this a performance to remember.
Vallejo’s former Co-Poets Laureate Jacalyn Eyvonne and Kathleen Herrmann will celebrate the launch of their new poetry anthology “A New Season: Poems from a World in Flux” at Alibi Bookshop on Saturday evening. The event will include an open mic for contributing poets and networking receptions before and after the program.
Then on Sunday, Sadie C. Sparkles and MissCherrylane will host a Black History Month-themed Drag Brunch at Bambino’s. This is an opportunity to embrace the vibrant spirit of the LGBTQ+ community and enjoy a brunch experience like no other.
If you can get up very early on Thursday, it’s not too late to sign up to volunteer for the 2026 Point In Time Count and help conduct a survey of people experiencing homelessness between 5:30 and 10 a.m. All registered volunteers will be provided training on how to engage vulnerable populations and how to complete surveys via a mobile app. This effort is considered an essential tool in understanding and ending homelessness by the count organizers, the Community Action Partnership Solano JPA.
Also on Thursday evening, you have a choice between two political events.
Solano County Supervisor Cassandra James and Vallejo City Councilmember Alexander Matias will hold a Community Engagement Meeting at the Veterans Memorial Building at 6 p.m. to engage directly with residents, provide updates, and answer questions from constituents. Community engagement meetings for other Vallejo districts will be held in the future.
And U.S. Rep. John Garamendi will host an ICE Townhall over Zoom at 6:30 p.m. and share how he’s holding ICE accountable for recent overreaches, give constituents tools to fight back, and hold federal officials accountable for their actions.
A little farther afield on Thursday evening, the American Canyon Community and Parks Foundation will host a tour of the future site of the Napa River Ecology Center where you can enjoy light refreshments, hear about future use plans, and learn about the latest development updates. Participate in an artist-led community paint project, learn more about the mosaic mural tile project, and enjoy a beautiful sunset view from the private trail. Space is limited so pre-registration is required.

Alibi Bookshop Feminist Book Club: Hood Feminism by Mikki Kendall
February is Black History Month, and Chelsea and Caroline have chosen to read and discuss “Hood Feminism” by Mikki Kendall. “The fights against hunger, homelessness, poverty, health disparities, poor schools, homophobia, transphobia, and domestic violence are feminist fights. Kendall offers a feminism rooted in the livelihood of everyday women.” —Ibram X. Kendi, #1 New York Times-bestselling author of How to Be an Antiracist. Mikki Kendall takes aim at the legitimacy of the modern feminist movement, arguing that it has chronically failed to address the needs of all but a few women. Drawing on her own experiences with hunger, violence, and hypersexualization, along with incisive commentary on reproductive rights, politics, pop culture, the stigma of mental health, and more, Hood Feminism delivers an irrefutable indictment of a movement in flux. An unforgettable debut, Kendall has written a ferocious clarion call to all would-be feminists to live out the true mandate of the movement in thought and in deed.
