VALLEJO — Verismo Opera will premiere a double bill at Mira Theatre this Saturday, featuring “Dido and Aeneas” by Henry Purcell, and “Pagliacci” by Ruggero Leoncavallo.
“Dido and Aeneas” is an English Baroque opera masterpiece based on Virgil’s “The Aeneid.” It tells of love and tragedy between Dido, Queen of Carthage, and the Trojan hero Aeneas. This beloved gem includes stunning choruses, duos, trios and the iconic aria "Dido’s Lament."
In contrast to the measured passions of “Dido and Aeneas,” “Pagliacci” is full of uncontrollable passion, jealousy, tragedy, murder, and betrayal. Laugh and weep with Canio as he sings "Vesti la giubba" (the clown who cries behind his makeup).
The show will run Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons through March 8. Verismo Opera is offering free admission, supported by paid memberships, to make this art form available to all.
A puppet variety show that’s not just for kids will come to Vallejo Museum on Sunday afternoon. The Forbidden Puppet Cabaret and the San Francisco Bay Area Puppeteers Guild will present a collection of humorous, touching, moving and astounding skits.
The host of talented puppeteers includes Brian Narelle, who will do some stand up comedy through his alter ego, the canine poet Warren Peace, and Jim and Jan Bartz, who will make their handmade limberjack puppets dance to live music.
A very timely presentation and discussion by local author and Vallejo Sun reporter Isidra Mencos, “The Personal is Political: The Evolution of Spain and its Citizens from Dictatorship to Democracy,” will take place at Alibi Bookshop on Friday evening. This important lecture and discussion will examine the intersection between politics and private lives at a pivotal time in the history of Spain, with similarities happening in the US right now. Mencos grew up under the Franco dictatorship and was 17 when Franco died in 1975. The transition to democracy took years, but the cultural and sexual revolution happened fast. It was a time of hope, but also of political and social conflict. With democracy under threat around the world, Mencos will reflect on the impact that authoritarianism has in every aspect of a person’s life, and the decades-long shadow it casts.
A Black History Month special presentation will be held at the Vallejo Museum on Saturday afternoon. Charles Blatcher III will speak about the life and times of West Point graduate, Buffalo Soldier and Brigadier General Charles Young, who was the 3rd Black West Point graduate and highest ranked Black officer until the time of his passing. Blatcher is a Navy veteran and chair of the National Coalition of Black Veteran Organizations. He spent decades getting Young a posthumous promotion to brigadier general. Admission is free.
More musical offerings in Vallejo this week begin at the Empress Marquee Club, which will host the JR Deville Blues Band on Wednesday evening, and the Road Dog Revue on Thursday evening.
Then on Friday night, Noble Cinema Studios will host the Superstars of the Noble Open Mic contest, where the winning prize is a headlining event at the studio.
On Saturday evening you can dine to the sounds of the Bryan Girard Jazz Trio at Manny's Steakhouse, or to the blues and jazz of Alvon Johnson at the 4th Corner Speakeasy in the Red Men’s Hall.
And later on Saturday night, the King of #Hyphy, Keak da Sneak, will perform at Noble Cinema Studios, and Top Shelf and special guests will make you want to dance with A Classic Evening of Soul, "Motown & More" at the Empress Theatre.
These are just some highlights of things to do in Vallejo.
