VALLEJO — Vallejo Pista Sa Nayon, Vallejo’s largest annual Filipino cultural celebration will honor Philippine Independence Day at the 40th anniversary of the festival on Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on The Mare Island Promenade, in front of the historic Coal Sheds. Attendees will learn about the islands and experience a deeper dive into their history, traditions, history, food, language, and more.
Musicians and dancers are scheduled on two stages. Spanky and Roger Rigor of the VST & Company disco band, dance-pop sensation Jocelyn Enriquez, and vocalist Jed Madela are the headliners who will close out the show.
Over a dozen food vendors will represent the diverse flavors of the Philippines, and the cultural pavilion will host a kids’ area and a small stage with cultural showcases and hands-on activities.
Parking is limited, so visitors are encouraged to take advantage of the free ferry rides between the mainland ferry terminal and Mare Island during the event.
A very different experimental music event, Re:Sound SUN, will take place nearby in Building 34 at the Mare Island Historic core on Saturday Afternoon. Lori Goldston will improvise cello accompaniment to experimental films, and Matt Robidoux will demonstrate a kinetically operated instrument called the “corn synth.”
June is Pride month. On Saturday night the Vallejo Naval & Historical Museum will host Pride movie night: The Watermelon Woman, a 1996 film about Black lesbian identity by Black lesbian filmmaker Cheryl Dunye.
Then on Sunday, celebrate Pride with bottomless mimosas at the monthly Drag Brunch at Bambino’s hosted by Sadie C. Sparkles and Miss Cherry Lane.
Art and history will meet at the opening reception for the Wendy The Welder & The Mare Island Shipyard Workers exhibition at Mare Island Art Studios on Sunday afternoon. The exhibit honors the women who helped shape Mare Island history during World War II. The show will be open Sunday afternoons through June 27.
Art will bloom at the Benicia Arts Festival on Saturday, when multiple local galleries will feature interactive art experiences, unique exhibits, and a wide variety of live music, spoken word and performance art throughout the day. Oversized floral installations and drifting bubbles will mark participating locations, and a free vintage trolley will provide easy transport to all festival venues. With so many attractions to choose from, The Benicia Art Gallery Alliance has provided a comprehensive online schedule and interactive map to help you plan how to spend the day.
This is only a brief sampling of things to do in the Vallejo area. Scroll down the list below to find more art exhibits, live music and creative and recreational activities. Check our events page for an even more comprehensive listing of upcoming events and late-breaking updates.
