VALLEJO — Three events that celebrate Filipino heritage are scheduled for Saturday.
The Pista Sa Nayon festival on the Mare Island Waterfront Promenade is a full day of music, dance, and food that celebrates Filipino culture. The event is free to attend, and there’s a free ferry ride from the downtown ferry terminal to the island to help relieve your parking woes.
The festival will feature three stages with music styles ranging from folk to pop, and a cultural pavilion that celebrates Filipino culture through the power of words, art, and imagination.
Of course you can’t have a festival without food, and with over two dozen vendors you’ll be sure to find something that satiates your appetite. Grownups can wash it all down with a beverage from the adjacent Mare Island Brewing Co.
Then on Saturday evening, Bambino’s Restaurant will host a Filipino heritage talent showcase. DJ Ed Combong will start the evening with beats to get you moving and grooving, followed by stand up comedians Artie Valenzuela, Bong Robbie and Christian Baltazar.
For entertainment late into Saturday night, the Barrio Rave show at the Odd Fellows hall will present an all Filipino line up, with performers Ara, Athena, B2B, Chrispynoy, Edward Durus, Harabaz, Jay Dela Cruz, Robbiii, and Sonder.
The "Summer Salsa Sundays" series at Vino Godfather will begin this weekend with Carlos Xavier and his band. Doors open at noon for an hour of salsa dance lessons before the show. Luis Medina, host of KPFA radio’s "Con Sabor" radio show, will spin between band sets.
On Friday afternoon, Vallejo hip-hop artist LaRussell will host Vallejo Field Day, a free and fun community event for Vallejo youth at Setterquist Park. People can play basketball, pickleball, or navigate the inflatable obstacle course and enjoy healthy snacks and soft serve ice cream. Information booths featuring resources from local health, wellness and youth organizations will be on site.
Then on Friday evening, the documentary “Sally,” about the LGBT activist Sally Gearhart, will air at the 717 Integrity Project.
An opening reception for Carl Theodorski’s "Detritus of a Life" art show will be held on Saturday evening at Mare Island Art Studios. Theodorski’s work incorporates layers of paint with chunks cleaved from granite, and other debris and trash. Cocktails will be served, and guests are encouraged to wear 1960s-era cocktail party attire.
Baseball fans can root for the home team on Sunday evening at Wilson Park, when Vallejo Seaweed battles the Bakersfield Train Robbers.
These are just some highlights of upcoming events. Scroll down the list below for more live music, art, recreation, poetry and theater, and be sure to check our events page for late-breaking updates, artist workshops and kids’ activities.

Geography of Genealogy (Speaker Series)
Speaker Glen Holstein holds a PhD from U.C. Davist. While his professional career primarily concerned the geography of plants and animals, Glen also has a strong interest in patterns of human movements across landscapes, which is the geography of genealogy. Many of our ancestors were part of groups that left homelands at particular times and moved together to specific regions in America. For example, many people left Ireland during a blight that destroyed their potato crop and then moved to American places where they could make a living without growing potatoes. About the same time political upheavals caused many Germans to settle in quite different American regions. Such migrations are just two of many that will be discussed. If you are interested in attending, please send an e-mail to GSVBzoom@gmail.com to request a Zoom invitation.
