VALLEJO — This week offers no shortage of things to do in Vallejo, with the confluence of Valentine’s Day, the annual Flyway Festival, Black History Month events and Art Walk.
Valentine’s celebrations will kick off early with a couple of music events to get you in a romantic mood. During Thursday evening’s Music at the Chapel: Songs from the Heart by Candlelight, regional musicians and singers will perform an array of love songs in the beautiful, candlelit setting of St. Peter’s Chapel on Mare Island. Ticket holders will be entered into a raffle to win a bottle of French Champagne to enjoy on Valentine’s Day.
Then on Friday evening, Ariel Marin, James “Jae-E” Earley and their band will set the mood at the Love Songs, Chocolate, and Bubbly event at the Empress Marquee Club. Guests can indulge in Champagne and dishes like crab sandwiches, brie and fig jam crostini, and chocolate charcuterie.
The Red Room: Valentine’s R&B Experience at El Barbas on Friday evening is not limited to couples. This DJ-driven R&B experience will offer a photo booth, themed cocktails, and just for fun, you can select a color-coded status wrist band at the door – pink means you’re single and open to mingling, red means “it’s complicated” and green means you’re not available.
Saturday offers several options to enjoy a date in a romantic setting.
The Empress Marquee Club will host a midday high tea service at their Valentine’s Day Tea event with live music performed by Ben Flint on a historic Steinway piano. Perfect for couples, friends, and anyone who wants a little Valentine’s magic.
There are multiple options to enjoy dinner with live music on Saturday evening.
If you like Norteño music, Los Shakas De Cali will circulate among the tables at El Barbas while you dine, or if you prefer jazz, take your date to Manny’s, where the Bryan Girard Jazz Trio will perform on stage, or head over to the 4th Corner Speakeasy at the Red Men’s hall to hear Juan Escovedo’s Special Valentine’s Day Performance while you savor Earl’s BBQ.
Later on Saturday night evening, you can listen to romantic selections of soul and R&B by Jay King and Shawn Raiford at the Empress Theatre, or hip-hop by the Trunk Boiz at Northstar Studios.
If you’re 55 or older and like to dance, the Valentine's Day-themed Senior Prom: A Night To Love on Saturday evening at the Vallejo Community Center might be for you. Attend solo, with a guest or with friends, for music, dancing and hors d'oeuvres.
Another event with a romantic theme is the theatrical production of Barefoot in the Park at Bay Area Stage Theatre. The romantic comedy by Neil Simon is fast, funny, and irresistibly charming. Showtimes are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.
And if you need a last minute Valentine’s gift, or are simply interested in art, the Vallejo 2nd Friday Art Walk will take place downtown on Friday evening, with most of the activity on Marin Street between Georgia and Virginia Streets. Local artists will line the sidewalks and shops will stay open late. The City Arts Gallery is hosting a special show by Roberta Weir that includes some prints by her mentee Jerry Garcia. Also during Art Walk, the McCune Room is hosting a fiber arts show, Threads That Tie Us, with the work of 10 local artists on display.
And for more handmade art offerings, Mare Island Art Studios is hosting a Valentine's Day Sale on Saturday afternoon with a curated selection of handmade gifts by select artists, created with care and intention.
This weekend also marks the 30th anniversary of the San Francisco Bay Flyway Festival, which will be held from Friday afternoon through Sunday at Moschetti Coffee Roaster. This three-day event will feature art vendors, informational booths, talks by birding experts and guided nature tours in Vallejo and other nearby wetlands. The event will conclude with a birthday celebration for the festival’s founder Myrna Hayes.
February is Black History Month. Alibi Bookshop will host a book club meeting on Thursday evening to discuss civil rights activist James Baldwin’s memoir "The Fire Next Time."
Then on Friday and Saturday, the Black History Jazz & Blues Pop-Up & Wellness Event will honor Black history through music, community engagement, and wellness activities at the Vallejo Veterans Memorial Building. Highlights include live jazz and blues performances by the Seasoned Soul Band, community wellness resources, a Walk-A-Thon fundraiser, local vendor pop-ups, food trucks, and community activism. The event hours are Friday from 4 to 10 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
But wait, there’s more!
The local kayaking group will return from their winter hibernation on Sunday at Lake Chabot in Dan Foley Park. You may bring your own boats and gear, or borrow theirs.
The annual Mardi Paws fundraiser for the Humane Society of the North Bay will take place on Tuesday evening at Provisions restaurant. Enjoy a Cajun-style buffet with vegetarian options available followed by a high-energy Dessert Dash competition.
This only scratches the surface of things to do in Vallejo, so please scroll down the list below to find more live music and creative and recreational activities in Vallejo and the surrounding area. Baldwin spent much of his life in France, where he moved to escape the racism and homophobia of the United States. A national bestseller when it first appeared in 1963, “The Fire Next Time” galvanized the nation and gave passionate voice to the emerging civil rights movement.
