VALLEJO — Vallejo hip-hop artist E-40 is sponsoring his third annual toy drive at Shiloh Community Church on Saturday. There will be free toys, bikes and scooters, food, games and live music. Kids must be present to receive gifts that will be given out on a first come, first served basis.
And that’s not the only toy giveaway this weekend. The Greater Vallejo Recreation District will distribute toys at their Snow Many Toys Giveaway on Friday evening at Children’s Wonderland. Children must be present and pre-registered to receive their toy.
The Boys & Girls Empowerment Group, joined by other Vallejo and Solano County organizations and businesses, is holding a Community Christmas Celebration at Solano County Fairgrounds on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. Toy distribution is available for families who register in advance.
This year’s celebration will feature community resources and youth-focused organizations, a visit from Santa Claus and a special appearance by the Grinch (DJ Green Jack). Holiday games, local truck and car clubs, live music, a variety of food and hot chocolate will round out the free event.
Also on Saturday, the Vallejo Museum will host their Annual Holiday Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Magical Moonshine puppet theater will perform Puppylocks and the Three Bears, and books will be given away during storytime. Tea and cookies will be served, and The Grinch and Santa will make appearances here too!
Then on Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. at the former Federal Building on Marin Street, The Island of Misfit Toys will give away toys and a bike raffle entry to kids who register in advance.
Or, your child may enjoy having breakfast with Santa at the Dan Foley Cultural Center on Saturday morning. Sign up for either the 10 or 11 a.m session to secure your spot.
The Santa Holiday Tea at noon at the Empress Marquee Club is a swankier affair, with gourmet treats, live holiday piano music and a professional photo with Santa.
Plus, Santa will also visit the Filipino Community Center at their annual Christmas party on Saturday at 3 p.m. Enjoy dinner, desserts and cultural and family performances. Filipino attire, Christmas colors, or festive wear is encouraged.
If your child is artistically inclined, check out the free Magical Glass family workshop at St. Peter’s Chapel on Sunday morning. The event will begin with a viewing of the chapel’s stained glass windows, then everyone will make their own tissue paper stained glass window from templates that celebrate many holiday traditions, including Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa.
Many events for adults will have holiday themes too. Blues great Alvon Johnson and friends will play Holiday Blues at the Empress Marquee Club on Wednesday evening, and saxophonist Bryan Girard and pianist Mark Rossi will play laid-back holiday jazz at a dinnertime show at Manny's Steakhouse on Saturday.
Still, not every event has a holiday theme. Local artist Robert Simmons will visit Ethnic Notions Fine Art Gallery & Multicultural Bookstore on Saturday afternoon, where you can see some of his latest work and hear firsthand about the inspirations behind his art.
This only scratches the surface of the many things to do in and around Vallejo. Scroll down the list below to find more live music, community meetings, and creative and recreational activities.
