Upcoming Vallejo Events — Melba’s Kitchen all-women big band comes to Vino Godfather

VALLEJO — Melba’s Kitchen, a 14-piece, all-women big band that celebrates Black women musical geniuses, will throw an end-of-summer jazz lawn party at Vino Godfather on Sunday afternoon.

Led by trombonist Pat Mullan and saxophonist Nzingah Smith, Melba’s Kitchen is named in honor of the late jazz trombonist, arranger, and composer Melba Liston, who worked with Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday, John Coltrane, and Count Basie.

Melba’s Kitchen will play tunes by Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, Sly Stone, Basie, Abbey Lincoln, and more, including sophisticated and swinging compositions by Liston, Mary Lou Williams, and band originals.

This big band has performed regularly over the last ten years at Yoshi’s Oakland, Berkeley’s Freight and Salvage, San Francisco’s de Young Museum, and other venues.

For a contemporary, immersive sound experience, check out Re:Sound VIBRATION on Saturday afternoon at the Mare Island Historic core, inside Building 34.

Re:Sound is an experimental music series that explores the relationship between forgotten spaces, sound abstraction, and the natural environment. Audio-visual artists at this event will be Kamran Shafii, Jamael Smith and Zachary James Watkins

Bring a chair or blanket to sit on. Earplugs are available on site at no cost. Portions of this performance may include strobing light, which may be disruptive to photo-sensitive people. Food and drink will be available at nearby Redwood distillery.

Or if you’re in the mood for an old-world European-style circus, Zoppé Italian Family Circus will set up their tent at Solano County Fairgrounds on Friday evening, with acrobats, animals and comedy continuing through Sept. 28.

Vallejo Together's 3rd Annual Gala will take place on Friday evening at the Dan Foley Cultural Center. The event will honor the legacy of Maria Guevara, celebrate the impact of Vallejo Together, recognize community champions, and raise critical financial resources to support our unhoused neighbors.

Enjoy a delicious dinner, complimentary champagne, mocktails, an inspiring program, and an exciting silent auction that celebrates the spirit of community.

An opportunity to turn young people on to chess will be offered by The Black Men's Chess League at the Springstowne Library on Saturday afternoon. This two-hour program for ages 5-18 will consist of a semi-formal instructional section, followed by an open session where participants can play with others. Any level of chess experience is welcome. Playing materials and snacks will be provided. The Black Men's Chess League is a Bay Area based non-profit created by black men dedicated to teaching and fostering community.

Mare Island Brewing Co. Coal Shed Brewery will continue their Pints with Politicians series, with District 4 Councilmember Candidate Brianna Rogers at the pub on Thursday evening.  Come have a conversation (and grab a pint) with your council candidate. The series will continue with candidates Chris Platzer on Oct. 1 and Charles Palmares on Oct. 8.

Then on Saturday, a Candidate Forum for Vallejo City Council, the VCUSD School Board, the Solano County Board of Education, and the Solano County Board Of Supervisors will take place at the Norman C King South Vallejo Community Center. The Forum will begin with a Continental breakfast at 9:30 a.m, then a town hall and lunch mixer, with candidate forums running from 12:30 to 3 p.m.

For fun outside of Vallejo, raise a stein and celebrate at the Benicia Oktoberfest on Saturday at the Benicia First Street Green. Enjoy authentic German beer, traditional food, live Bavarian music, family-friendly activities, a bustling artisan marketplace, stein-holding competitions, and a free Mega Kids Zone.

Coastal Cleanup Day

There’s still time to join the 42nd annual Coastal Cleanup Day event at locations around Solano County. This Saturday, September 19th, will feature more than 30 sites around the county where volunteers will join their neighbors to clean up trash and recyclable beverage containers. From 9 a.m. to noon, participants will do their part to help prevent marine debris by picking up litter in Solano County’s parks, roadways, creeks, schoolyards, and other open spaces. 

Locations for the cleanup event are listed at cleanupsolano.org, and volunteers are encouraged or required to pre-register before the event. Participants in Coastal Cleanup Day should bring their own work gloves, trash pickers, buckets, and reusable water bottles, but sites will have some of these supplies on hand as well.

Nothing To See Here – Jason Perry

"Nothing To See Here" is a critical, yet playful examination of the UFO phenomenon that is hinged on the dynamic between serious scientific inquiry and fringe science.

With a mixed media approach that combines drawing, collage, and painting, Jason Perry seeks to entice the viewer into the work through familiar visual iconography, bold colors, expressive marks, and textures. Once there, the viewer is offered a deeper layer of meaning to consider. Perry calls into question the blurred narratives, misinformation, and potential truths surrounding the UFO topic.

At its core, "Nothing To See Here" invites us to look a little closer at our beliefs, our relationship to the strange, the unexplained, and our enduring fascination with what might be out there.

Join us every Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. for a relaxing hike at the Glen Cove Waterfront Park. These hikes are beginner-friendly, family-friendly, dog-friendly and welcoming to all fitness levels! It will be a time to relax, reset, and focus on enjoying nature, good company, and peaceful transition from work into the rest of your evening. Whether you're new to hiking, looking to meet new friends, or simply want a healthy way to decompress, we'd love to have you with us. Let's enjoy Vallejo's trails together. City Council Regular Meeting

City Council meetings are hybrid in-person and on Zoom. Agendas can be viewed on the City Agendas & Videos website and are posted a minimum of 72 hours in advance for regular meetings and 24 hours in advance for special meetings.

There will be a video link at the left of the agenda page once the meeting begins. This will also serve as a future archive of the meeting. For better live video performance, use the direct Zoom link found in the first paragraph of the agenda window, on the second tab. City Council meetings are also broadcast on Vallejo’s cable channel, VCAT.
