VALLEJO — October’s 2nd Friday Art Walk will spotlight Native American and Indigenous culture at City Arts Gallery on Friday evening, with presentations on medicine making, storytelling, and the Sonoma County Pomo Dancers dancing in regalia.
Renowned drum maker Richard Flittie will share his craft, bringing the heartbeat of Native tradition to life. Alicia Gomez, Marcelina Chendy, Chris Micro and other Indigenous artists will showcase their art.
There's much more to explore during Art Walk throughout downtown. From Ethnic Notions Gallery and Bookstore at Marin and Florida Streets to the McCune Collection in the lower level of the John F. Kennedy Library, visitors can explore local galleries, street performances, artisan vendors, and live entertainment. The Neighborhood Plant Dealer will host a Monstera Music Mixer and A Veil in the Wind belly dance troupe will perform with live music at Bambino’s.
An Art Walk afterparty with live music by The David El 3-Oh! will be held at 717 Integrity Project. The Indie After Dark music show at the Red Men’s Hall has been canceled due to a planned power outage.
Also on Friday evening, SOL the Musical will premier at the Mira Theatre. SOL explores the tensions between Philippine island life and American culture, the scars and strengths of immigration, and the universal struggle to heal family wounds. Based on a book by Charlene Cher Alberto, with music co-written by Alberto and Melody Habib. Additional performances are scheduled Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Oct. 26.
Another offering on Friday evening is an authentic flamenco dance performance by the Sol Flamenco ensemble at Vino Godfather's 10th anniversary Paella Party. The event includes a Spanish style dinner by Ñora Cocina Española paired with a variety of Vino Godfather wines.
Then on Saturday evening, the Oakland Jazz Choir will bring their powerhouse vocals and electrifying energy to Bay Area Stage Theatre for a one-night-only performance. This dynamic ensemble lights up the stage with rich harmonies, vibrant rhythms, and a genre-defying blend of jazz, soul, and gospel.
An opening reception will be held at Autonomous Gallery on Saturday evening for their group art show, My Existence Is Resistance. Celebrate the art and meet the artists while enjoying food and DJ music.
For a holotta fun late into Saturday night, check out the Townhouse Divas Drag Show at the Townhouse Cocktail lounge, with drag star Holotta Tymes and friends. The Townhouse will also be celebrating longtime doorman Jay Kubovec’s birthday that evening, so drop by and raise your glass to Jay.
The annual Sprout Film Festival will take place at the Vallejo Museum on Sunday afternoon. This event focuses exclusively on films celebrating the diverse lives and creativity of people with developmental disabilities. Previous attendees have been blown away by the talent they've seen on the screen and they've enjoyed themselves immensely. Plus, the silent auction offers gift cards from our local community, exciting trips, and artwork from local artisans.
Funds raised from the Sprout Film Festival are used towards Arc-Solano’s mission to promote the greatest personal growth, community understanding, and full participation of people with developmental disabilities and their families.

October LGBTQ+ Book Club: The Gilda Stories by Jewelle Gomez
Before Buffy, before Twilight, before Octavia Butler's Fledgling, there was The Gilda Stories, Jewelle Gomez's sexy vampire novel -- and the Alibi LGBTQ+ Book Club is going to talk all about it. Voted One of Book Riot's Most Influential Queer Books & Horror Novels of All Time, this remarkable novel begins in 1850s Louisiana, where Gilda escapes slavery and learns about freedom while working in a brothel. After being initiated into eternal life as one who "shares the blood" by two women there, Gilda spends the next two hundred years searching for a place to call home. An instant lesbian classic when it was first published in 1991, The Gilda Stories has endured as an auspiciously prescient book in its explorations of blackness, radical ecology, re-definitions of family, and yes, the erotic potential of the vampire story.

Daily event this week
DIY Sensory Craft
Celebrate Filipino American Heritage Month with this month's drop in craft. For October, we're making the craft version of the famous Filipino dessert, halo-halo. Halo-halo is dessert consisting of shaved ice, sweet beans, fruits, jelly, tapioca pearls, and milk, often topped with ube ice cream and leche flan. The name halo-halo means "mix-mix" in Tagalog, referring to the act of mixing all the colorful and textured ingredients together to enjoy the combined sweet and creamy flavors before eating. Using a variety of sensory craft supplies, we're building a version of the icy treat that won't melt. Drop in during open hours while supplies last.
