VALLEJO — More dance and live music events are coming to downtown Vallejo this week at the Odd Fellows and Red Men’s halls on Georgia Street.
The first Friday of the month is now Goth Night at the Odd Fellows Hall. Dance to industrial, EDM and darkwave music. The hall’s big dance floor and high ceiling with weird Odd Fellows symbols in the plasterwork provide a perfect goth backdrop. Admission is free and there will be a full bar. Must be 21 years old and over.
Then on Saturday night, the Odd Fellows will host the Decades Dance Party, when DJs will take you through a musical history tour, playing 70s disco and funk from 8 to 10 p.m., 80s pop and new wave from 10 p.m. to midnight, and 90s pop and hip-hop from midnight to 2 a.m. This is also a 21 and over event with a full bar and a $10 cover.
This popular event was held monthly before the Covid-19 shutdown, and will now only take place once or twice a year, so if you are a Decades fan you won’t want to miss this.
Across the street at the Red Men’s Hall, the 2nd Planet band will play contemporary jazz, rock, R&B and funk in their 4th Corner Speakeasy venue, which has been updated with a stage and dance floor. The speakeasy has a full bar and will offer a catered dinner by Earl’s BBQ. Frazier Trager Presents is now helping book 4th Corner Speakeasy with live music every Saturday, in addition to the Indie After Dark shows on second Fridays.
If you don’t get the enough goth at the Odd Fellows event, Grimoire's Gothic Market will be at the Solano County Fairgrounds on Saturday and Sunday afternoon, with a folklore-themed market that offers aspects of Halloween, horror, witches, vampires, classic monsters, tall tales, campfire stories, the supernatural, and dark fairytale works in the form of crystals, plushies, candles, herbology, and hand-made goods and clothing. Gothic or formal attire is encouraged, but not required. Tickets will not be available at the door and must be purchased online.
Then you can get in the mood for Sunday’s Superbowl at the football-themed C@MEDY KICK OFF at Chris' Club on Saturday evening, and laugh along with comedians Ricco Da Great, Strange James and Shaun Grady.
Solano County 9th-12th grade poets will compete to participate in the statewide Poetry Out Loud Competition at the Vallejo Museum on Friday afternoon. The public is invited to attend this free event and support local students.
For family fun on Saturday night, check out the Family Glow-in-the-Dark Dodgeball event at the GVRD Sports Gym. Put on something neon, play with family, and get competitive while fully submerged in a cool, glow in the dark ambiance. Dodgeballs will be provided. This event is for players 6 and up. Players 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
Then on Sunday afternoon, Ethnic Notions will host an artist reception for their ongoing Art of the African Diaspora exhibit. Discover the distinctive talents and creative perspectives of artists Rose Sharon Oates, Keana Dollar-Dicker, Kelvin Curry, Saida Hogan Nassirruddin and Vivien Jenette. Please RSVP for the artist reception at (707) 334-3060.
Venture outside of Vallejo to enjoy an array of fine wine samplings paired with delicious chocolate tastings at the Wine & Chocolate Walk in Benicia. Gather your friends and stroll along First Street to savor the flavors, and discover all that historic downtown Benicia has to offer.

Auxiliary February Book Club: 1984 by George Orwell
Orwell has been quoted a lot lately, and with good reason. Have you read “1984,” or has it been a while? I think it’s a good idea to read or reread it now, so Alibi Bookshop has added an extra book club next month: please join us on February 10th to discuss, and to be with our community to support one another. Our minds and hearts are with the people of Minneapolis. If you don’t already own a copy of 1984, please buy one from a Minneapolis bookseller on https://bookshop.org/— you can search for one in the store locator— they could use all our support right now.
“The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”
