VALLEJO — Saturday is California Coastal Cleanup Day in Vallejo. This year, volunteers will have 14 sites to choose from, from the northern edge of Vallejo along the Napa River to the Glenn Cove waterfront, and lakes, rivers and shorelines in-between.
The cleanup will begin at 9 a.m. and registration is requested. This year’s “Trashure Hunt,” which offers prizes, is managed by the Vallejo Wastewater District, VALCORE Recycling and the Solano Resource Conservation District.
The Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum will host an “1851 Gala” fundraiser on Saturday evening, and celebrate the year Vallejo was founded as the state capital with dinner, drinks, dessert and a live and silent auction. Dance instructor Cynthia Barnes will teach the authentic steps to old California and mid-19th century American dances to the music of The Brassworks 5. Period costumes are encouraged.
The second annual Maria Guevara Gala on Friday evening will raise funds to advance the work of the organization she founded, Vallejo Together. The Gala will take place at the Dan Foley Cultural Center and celebrate Guevara’s legacy as an advocate for “our friends without shelter” and raise funds to further her work.
Don your dressy attire and enjoy delicious food and champagne during the brief program that will include keynote speakers, a message from Vallejo Together’s board president, a recognition ceremony, and an opportunity to win raffle prizes. There will also be a no-host bar, and the evening will conclude with DJ dancing.
Or on Friday evening, wear your favorite Hawaiian shirt to an island party at the Florence Douglass Center. The Hawaiian Luau dinner will feature live entertainment by Ukulele Lovers of Vallejo and the Ohana Maika dance troupe.
The National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) will advocate for mental health on Saturday, beginning with a morning walk to the Vallejo Waterfront from Missionary Baptist Church, and culminating with a free community event at the Empress Theatre at 1 p.m. with comedy, a documentary, and a Q&A session on mental health.
Comedian Daniel Laitman is a nationally touring comedian and mental health advocate who brings humor, insight, and lived experience in a performance that uplifts and connects.
The documentary "Into the Light: Meaningful Recovery From Psychosis" presents innovative approaches to mental health treatment. The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with Dr. Rob Laitman, a leading advocate in the field of mental health and a key figure in the documentary.
Then on Sunday afternoon, The Empress Theater will premiere the film “The New Year That Never Came,” which won the Orizzonti Award for Best Film at the 2024 Venice Film Festival. The historical drama returns to the absurd circumstances of the fall of Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu over Christmas 1989 through a darkly humorous lens.
Of course there’s lots of live music going on in Vallejo this weekend. The Bobby Young Project will play blues, soul, and rock at the Empress Marquee Club on Wednesday evening. Guitarist Nicholas Lefler will perform his unique blend of genres at a dinnertime show at the Mare Island Brewing Co.’s coal shed brewery on Friday.
Duo Gadjo will play jazz with a French twist at Saturday morning’s community coffee tasting event at Moschetti Coffee Roaster’s. Then the Earth Wind and Fire tribute band Kalimba will play at Vino Godfather on Saturday afternoon.
Later on Saturday evening, you can enjoy hip-hop at the Summer Climax show at Carnalito’s Customs, or choose between two jazz performances on the waterfront with singer Joyce Grant at the Ferry Taproom, or the Bryan Girard Jazz Trio at Manny's Steakhouse. Then on Sunday afternoon, the Santana tribute band Carnival will perform at Vino Godfather.

Their style is often called ‘Gypsy Jazz’ as pioneered by the great guitarist Django Reinhardt who, singlehandedly created this new genre by infusing the American art form with his French, and Gypsy influences. Duo Gadjo’s repertoire, featuring Isabelle Fontaine on vocals, includes many French classics as sung by Edith Piaf, Charles Trenet, Yves Montand and others, as well as standards from the Great American songbook. The Empowered Self: A Transformative Letting Go Art Experience
In this unique art class, you’ll have the opportunity to explore your inner world through the power of painting. Rather than focusing on technical skills or creating a specific representational image, the emphasis will be on the transformative process of self-expression. We’ll begin with a guided meditation that will invite you to visualize and connect with an empowered version of yourself – your “ideal avatar.” This potent visualization will then serve as a launching point for your painting journey. Using a variety of vibrant paints, you’ll be encouraged to let your brush flow freely, allowing colors, shapes, and symbols to emerge organically onto the canvas. This open-ended approach is not about talent or technique, but about tapping into your intuition and allowing your inner realm to unfold. Whether you consider yourself an artist or a complete beginner, this class provides a judgment-free space for you to explore and express your authentic self. All materials will be provided, so you can simply show up, get centered, and let your creativity guide the way. Get ready to unveil new insights, emotions, and a deeper understanding of who you are. This class is not about the final product – it’s about the transformative power of the creative process. Join us and embark on a journey of self-discovery through paint.
- Sat, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

City Council Regular Meeting
City Council meetings are hybrid in-person and on Zoom. Agendas can be viewed on the City Agendas & Videos webpage at www.cityofvallejo.net and are posted a minimum of 72 hours in advance for regular meetings and 24 hours in advance for special meetings. There will be a video link at the left of the agenda page once the meeting begins. This will also serve as a future archive of the meeting. For better live video performance, use the direct Zoom link found in the first paragraph of the agenda window, on the second tab.
