Jazz showcases, soul, gospel, and hip-hop will be performed throughout the day, and former Vallejo Poet Laureate Jacalyn Eyvonne will offer poetic reflections. A youth and kid zone will feature youth performances, live painting with a young artist, horse and pony rides, and more.
Confirmed community leadership speakers include Solano County Supervisor Cassandra R. James, Vallejo City Councilmember Dr. Tonia Lediju, NAACP Vallejo President Patricia Hunter, Vallejo District 5 candidate Tara Beasley-Stansberry, community organizer Rob Reason and Mrs. California Black United States Amanda Henry.
And of course there will be food by local vendors and a beer and wine garden for adults.
Then at 6 p.m., learn The Real Truth About the Black Cowboy at the Vallejo Museum. Featured speaker Albert R. Harris will lead the conversation, and share historical insight, cultural truth about Black cowboy legacy and its lasting impact on American history. The evening will also include dynamic entertainment by Julie Brand Latin Jazz and other musicians, cultural fashions, poetry and more, in a celebration of Black creativity, artistry, and heritage. A suggested donation of $10 at the door will support the event organizers and artists.
A Black History Month Celebration will also take place at the Napa Junction Community Center in American Canyon on Saturday afternoon. This immersive celebration of Black excellence will feature live music, dancing, a cultural culinary experience, Black-owned vendors and more!
Art lovers may enjoy new gallery shows that open on Sunday afternoon.
Mare Island Art Studios will host two separate shows that feature women in the arts. The In Her Power exhibition and opening reception is a celebration of women artists exploring power as something lived, embodied, and deeply personal. An adjacent show, Curiosities, presents a selection of art and artifacts gathered by the centenarian Dorothy Herger over a lifetime of world travel. Herger’s collection features baskets, masks, ceremonial objects and Herger’s own ceramic works. Both shows will be open Sunday afternoons in March, with an artist reception for the Curiosities show on March 8.
In Benicia, the Marilyn Citron O'Rourke Art Gallery at the Benicia Public Library will showcase the work of Linda Fleming, a sculptor known for intricate drawings and airy, lattice-like constructions that shift with light and shadow. The artist reception will be held on Sunday, March 22 and the exhibit will be on display through April 13.
Also on Saturday and Sunday, the annual Vallejo Gem and Mineral Show will take place at the Solano County Fairgrounds in McCormack Hall, with vendors selling rocks, minerals, fossils, beads, lapidary related equipment, tools and supplies.
