VALLEJO — This weekend is jam packed with fun things to do in Vallejo, including the second annual Kite Festival and the Fiestas Patrias Mexican Independence Day celebration on Saturday, the Founder's Day Living History Tour on Mare Island on Sunday, and second Friday Art Walk on Friday.
The second annual Vallejo Kite Festival will soar at Barbara Kondylis Waterfront Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This free, family-friendly event will feature demonstrations by professional kite flyers and drone pilots, a virtual hot air balloon experience, live DJ music and snacks and food trucks. Activities for all ages will include face painting, kite making and flying zones for beginners and pros. Bring a blanket or folding chairs to enjoy a picnic on the grass while you watch the kites fly overhead. Five hundred free kites will be given away, so come early to get yours.
Around the corner from the waterfront, Fiestas Patrias will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the 200 block of Georgia Street. Bands and performers representing different musical genres and traditions of Mexico and other Latin American countries will take the stage. Food trucks will offer the flavors of the region and craft vendors will offer both modern and traditional items for sale.
Vallejo Mayor Andrea Sorce, City Manager Andrew Murray, Solano County Supervisor Cassandra James, and representatives from various Latin American countries will speak at the festival.
Then on Sunday afternoon, the Mare Island Historic Park Foundation will celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the U.S. Naval Shipyard this month in 1854 with a unique event: a reenactment of what life was like on the shipyard and the island during World War II.
The Founder's Day Living History Tour is an immersive walking tour with live reenactments of shipbuilders, welders, and the crew of the USS Indianapolis, plus music, drinks, and a silent auction. You’ll meet our own Wendy the Welders as they describe their shipyard work, learn how vessels were built from a group of shipbuilders, and hear first-hand accounts from those connected to the ill-fated USS Indianapolis, lost at sea on the last day of the war. The experience will begin and end at the Admiral’s Mansion, where you will have the opportunity to engage with all of the actors, enjoy a beer or wine, and meet Admiral David Farragut. Sorry, no children under 8 years old.

With Mami as her unpredictable, stubborn, and often amusing guide, Rojas Contreras traces her lineage back to her Indigenous and Spanish roots, uncovering the violent and rigid colonial narrative that would eventually break her mestizo family into two camps: those who believe “the secrets” are a gift, and those who are convinced they are a curse.
