Solano deputies accuse sheriff of ‘potentially racist’ remarks

FAIRFIELD – The Solano County Deputy Sheriff’s Association on Wednesday accused Sheriff Brad DeWall of “offensive and potentially racist” remarks at a sheriff’s office event to celebrate employee promotions. 

According to the statement posted to the association’s political action committee Facebook page, the organization received complaints from multiple association members about DeWall’s remarks at the event, which were at a promotion ceremony earlier this week that was attended by about 25 employees and community members.

The complaints alleged that DeWall arrived late and commented on how dark the back of the room was where several people of color were seated. “When an employee of color smiled, Acting Sheriff DeWall allegedly responded by saying, ‘I can see you now,’” the post stated.

The statement said that the allegations were especially concerning to the sheriff’s association because when deputies frequently face allegations of racism or discriminatory behavior it is important to demonstrate that all ranks are held accountable for maintaining high ethical and professional standards. 

“When conduct that undermines trust is ignored or left unaddressed, it makes the job of every law enforcement professional more difficult,” the statement said. “Accountability cannot depend on title or position.”

Solano County spokesperson Matthew Davis disputed the deputy association account in an email. 

“While we respect the right of individuals and organizations to raise concerns and ask questions, the allegations described in the post are inaccurate,” Davis wrote. “The post itself acknowledges that the author was not present and did not personally witness the interaction.” 

According to Davis, the event recognized employees who have earned advancement through hard work, professionalism, and dedication to public service. “It is disappointing that an event focusing on recognizing these achievements has become the subject of inaccurate allegations that do not reflect what occurred,” Davis wrote.   

Solano County Deputy Sheriff’s Association President Randy Pratt did not respond to further questions from the Vallejo Sun about the complaints.

The social media post noted that individuals who witnessed DeWall’s statements may be reluctant to come forward for fear of retaliation but it encouraged anyone affected by the incident to reach out to the organization for support.

DeWall was appointed as sheriff by the county Board of Supervisors on Aug. 12 after former Sheriff Tom Ferrera announced his retirement. DeWall’s appointment ends in January 2029. Ferrara was elected to serve a normal four-year term in 2022 but legislation enacted that year extended the term through 2028 by requiring elections for certain county positions to coincide with presidential election years.  

Prior to his appointment as sheriff, DeWall had served as undersheriff since 2019. He began his career in 1991 when he was hired as a county corrections officer.
